ABOUT SINGULAR GENOMICS
Singular Genomics is inventing at the forefront of genomics, one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. The commercially available G4® Sequencing Platform is a powerful, highly versatile benchtop genomic sequencer designed to produce fast and accurate results. In addition, the company is currently developing the G4X™ Spatial Sequencer, an upgrade to the G4, which will leverage Singular’s proprietary sequencing technology, applying it as an in situ readout for transcriptomics, proteomics and fluorescent H&E in tissue, with spatial context. Singular Genomics’ mission is to empower researchers and clinicians to advance science and medicine.
We foster a culture of creativity and technical excellence, both catalysts for innovation. We celebrate diversity, emphasize collaboration and, as we rapidly mature, we are constantly looking at ways we can do better for our people.
Our Headquarters are located on the Torrey Pines Mesa, in La Jolla, California at the center of the biotech hub. Our Manufacturing facility is in Sorrento Valley.
Position Summary:
As a Research Associate on the Histology team, you will be the foundation of platform development by maintaining and sectioning FFPE tissue blocks; support development of our proprietary tissue mounting system; use your background knowledge in histology and molecular diagnostics to identify controls, workflows, and enhancements to improve assay robustness and reliability; aid in expanding our assays to new tissue types, and provide guidance and expert advice to assay developers for interpreting results and expectations, and be the voice of histology when working with customers and collaborators.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in FFPE tissue sectioning and assessment using traditional histochemical staining such as H&E, familiarity in molecular assays on preserved tissue (e.g., IHC, IF, ISH/FISH) using a variety of microscopy readouts (brightfield, fluorescence etc.), and be comfortable following established complex assay workflows.
You will be working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists in the fields of surface chemistry, engineering, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. This role is ideally suited to a candidate who is self-motivated and excited by a startup environment where opportunity to rise to frequent and diverse challenges is commonly encountered.
Responsibilities:
- Operate a microtome to produce consistent, high-quality FFPE tissue sections .
- Support development teams by providing expert advice and guidance on tissue handling, experimental design, expectations, and interpretation of results.
- QC FFPE tissues prior to using in assay development.
- Actively contribute to optimizing in situ workflows.
- Establish standards for onboarding and assessing performance of standard and new tissue types .
- Collaboration and effective communication with team members in (surface) chemistry, biochemistry, systems integration, image analysis, and bioinformatics.
- Maintain meticulous notes and databases of relevant reagents, experiments, equipment, and other processes.
- Contribute to writing SOPs and other documentation.
Qualifications:
- B.S. in Biochemistry/biomedical sciences or related field plus 2-3+ years of histology experience.
- 1-2 years of microtomy experience.
- Hands on experience in precision microtomy with a focus on minimizing tissue loss of precious samples.
- Understanding of healthy and diseased clinical samples is a plus.
- Working knowledge of fluorescence microscopy is a plus.
- Experience with molecular pathology assays (e.g., immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence) and performance in different tissue types. Experience with multiplexed assays is strongly preferred.
The estimated base salary range for this role based in the United States of America is: $68,640 - $92,800. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Should the level of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable salary range may be updated accordingly. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
