At ONI, we are driven by a profound mission: to propel scientific discovery and combat diseases by granting everyone the ability to visualize, comprehend, and share the intricate microscopic details of life. Our revolutionary Nanoimager stands at the forefront of advancing cellular studies on a molecular level, making substantial contributions to the evolution of scientific knowledge.
We dedicate ourselves to broadening the realms of human potential, and we are actively seeking an enthusiastic and devoted Software Engineer to join our pioneering team located in Oxford. We believe in the power of relentless curiosity and the pursuit of excellence, and we invite you to join us in shaping the future of scientific exploration and healthcare breakthroughs. We are seeking a highly skilled Software Systems Architect with Systems Engineering expertise to lead the design and evolution of advanced software systems for image processing and high-performance computing applications. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in modern C++, GPU programming (CUDA / OpenCL), and real-time image or video processing. You will define architectural standards, lead cross-functional design reviews, and guide teams in building scalable, efficient, and maintainable solutions that power next-generation imaging technologies. In this role you will build software solutions for the automation of super-resolution microscopy, image analysis to enable non-expert scientists to gain rapid and actionable insights using super-resolution across academic research, drug development, and diagnostics.

Your Role At ONI

  • Define and own the system and software architecture for imaging and computational platforms, ensuring scalability, performance, and modularity.
  • Collaborate with product management and engineering leads to translate product requirements into robust architectural designs.
  • Design and optimize high-performance pipelines for image capture, enhancement, and real-time processing using GPU acceleration.
  • Define software-hardware integration strategies, coordinating with firmware, electronics, and optics teams.
  • Partner with system engineers and hardware teams to align software architecture with imaging sensors, FPGA, and GPU hardware.
  • Drive development of core C++ libraries, frameworks, and SDKs supporting multiple applications and hardware platforms.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging parallel computing and GPU frameworks to improve efficiency and throughput.
  • Translate product and stakeholder requirements into system-level specifications and software requirements.
  • Conduct design reviews, establish best practices, and mentor development teams on C++ and GPU optimization techniques.
  • Lead profiling, benchmarking, and performance tuning across CPU and GPU boundaries.
  • Ensure architectural compliance with security, reliability, and quality standards.
  • Contribute to strategic technology roadmaps and R&D initiatives.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in software design and development, including 5+ years in system or software architecture.
  • Expert-level knowledge of modern C++ (C++14/17/20), templates, and multithreading.
  • Proven experience with GPU programming using CUDA/OpenCL.
  • Excellent knowledge of SOLID design principles and their application in developing software
  • Deep understanding of image processing, computer vision, or signal processing algorithms.
  • Strong background in performance optimization, memory management, and concurrency.
  • Experience integrating hardware-accelerated compute (e.g., NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, ARM).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale, cross-functional software efforts.
  • Desired skills and qualifications:
  • Experience with AI/ML-based image processing, TensorRT, or ONNX-based inference pipelines.
  • Experience with embedded systems, real-time OS, or edge compute architectures.
  • Knowledge of GPU performance profiling tools (e.g., NVIDIA Nsight, PerfHUD).
  • Experience of developing embedded software/hardware-software integrated solutions.
  • Experience as a Software Architect or similar role for commercial software.
  • Experience of developing microscopy/scientific software.
