Sitting at the core of Databricks’ data access ecosystem, Unity Catalog tackles some of the toughest engineering challenges—low latency, high availability, and extreme scalability. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead the Unity Catalog Storage team in developing the next-generation highly scalable, performant storage foundation layer for our data governance platform, supporting tens of billions of daily API requests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: You will lead and guide the team in building a highly scalable, performant, and extensible storage foundation for our governance platform. You will make critical long-term technical architecture decisions and balance the product roadmap.
  • Operational Excellence: You will build software that is not just high quality but easy to operate. You will ensure the team delivers high-quality, reliable infrastructure services with robust SLAs, testing, and monitoring.
  • Team Development: You will oversee sustained recruitment of top-tier talent, fostering a well-organized and synergistic team structure, and collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product and infrastructure teams to align strategy, execution, and roadmap in alignment with organizational goals and priorities.

What We Look For

  • 5+ years experience building database systems, storage systems, data platforms, distributed systems, or large-scale backend systems.
  • At least 3 years of experience in managing top-tier engineering teams
  • BS in Computer Science (Masters or higher level of education preferred)
  • Passion for building highly scalable and reliable infrastructure
  • Experience scaling engineering teams from 5 to 20+
  • Define and meet SLOs for highly-available systems
  • Expertise in attracting, hiring and coaching engineers, who will meet the Databricks hiring standards. Experience up-leveling teams via hiring top-notch talent and growing existing team members.
  • Ensure the team builds high quality and reliable infrastructure services; previous experience leading teams in a complex technical domain, such as on distributed data systems or large-scale data platforms.

Pay Range Transparency

Databricks is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents base salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings for commissionable roles. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Based on the factors above, Databricks utilizes the full width of the range. The total compensation package for this position may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above.
